From what I have learned in my trip, Cartagena de Indias was founded by Pedro de Heredia on 13 January 1533. In 1811 Cartagena declared its independence from Spain. But in 1815, after a heroic resistance, Cartagena was retaken by the royalists under Pablo Morillo, and in 1821 patriots finally freed it.
